TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - Tucson police have one man in custody after an early-morning search on Thursday, June 10.

Officers say it all started around 2:17 a.m. Thursday with several 911 calls about shots being fire in the 1200 block of North Alvernon. When officers arrived on scene, they report hearing shots. A little while later, there was a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Speedway and Rosemont. A security guard saw the crashed vehicle, a silver van. As the security guard approached, officials say he saw the suspect, 35-year-old Alex Grechanin, pull a rifle from the van. The security guard got away and flagged down a TPD officer who had a K-9 with him. The officer called out and the area was locked down.

Around 4:53 a.m., a K-9 alerted his handler to the suspect. Grechanin, who was bitten during the arrest, was found hiding in the Arizona room of a home in the area.

Officers recovered a rifle and a handgun. They estimate the suspect fired more than 50 and less than 100 shots.

Near Winstel and Bellvue, at least two businesses were hit by gunfire. TPD is asking anyone who lives in the Garden or Palo Verde neighborhoods to check for damage/bullet holes.

Grechanin is facing charges of drive-by shooting and discharging a firearm in the city.

Anyone with further information on the incident is asked to call 88-CRIME or 911.
